Upcoming URL Categorization Changes – (February 2026)
Overview
During February 2026, we will implement a significant upgrade to the URL categorization and filtering functionality in FortiMail Browser Security. This enhancement is designed to provide you with more granular control and a higher degree of policy precision.
Upgrade details
-
Target deployment date: February 2026
-
Enhanced granularity: Our categorization engine will transition from being a domain-based system to a URL-level system. This means that your policies will be able to apply to specific pages or paths within a website, rather than to the entire domain, thereby improving the accuracy of content filtering.
-
New category alignment: We are adopting the Fortinet standard category set, that offers richer, more detailed content classifications.
What this means for your existing policies
Your existing policies and blocking rules will be automatically migrated to the new category set.
Expected behavior
You may notice that policy enforcement becomes more precise. For example, a single website previously classified under a broad category may now have pages classified under different, more specific categories. For example, a "news" site may now have specific pages categorized as "Gambling" and others as "Shopping".
Action required
While the automatic migration will handle the mapping, we strongly recommend that you review your most critical blocking/allowing policies to ensure that the new, more granular mapping meets your specific compliance needs.
Summary
This change will lay the groundwork for better performance and more powerful policy configuration.
